The Engineering Council held engagement visits with the Ghana Chamber of Mines and Newmont Ghana in May 2026 as part of its sensitisation programme on the Engineering Council Act, 2011 (Act 819) and the Engineering Council Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2410).

The visits are part of a wider effort to reach key engineering employers and industry bodies ahead of the formal registration of engineering firms, which the Council has now commenced following its public notice on mandatory licensing.

The Council was represented by Engr. Prof. Mike Agbesi Acheampong, Ing. Ebenezer Kwesi Haizel, Esq. and the Registrar, Ing. Isaac Bedu. Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey also joined the delegation for the Ghana Chamber of Mines meeting.

The discussions covered the Council’s mandate, the requirements for licensing engineering practitioners and firms, how the licensing framework applies within the mining sector, and how the Council works alongside other statutory bodies to avoid overlap and ensure consistent regulation.

The Chamber and Newmont both engaged substantively on firm definitions, the practical application of licensing requirements, and the Council’s approach to enforcement. The Council reaffirmed its position: sensitisation comes first, followed by escalating enforcement where compliance is not forthcoming, with the full range of penalties under L.I. 2410 available where necessary.

The Ghana Chamber of Mines encouraged the Council to be more vocal on issues of national importance, particularly where engineering standards are at stake. The Council received this as reinforcement of a direction it is already moving in.

The Engineering Council welcomes the productive discussions and looks forward to building on the engagement with both organisations.

Further visits are scheduled in the coming months as the Council continues its sensitisation programme across the engineering sector.

On behalf of the Board and Management of the Engineering Council, I extend warm greetings to engineering practitioners across Ghana, the African continent, and the global engineering community. Today marks a special day where we celebrate every man and woman who has dedicated their talent, training, and tenacity to the practice of engineering.

Without question, the infrastructure that sustains daily life, the systems that power economic activity, and the solutions that address our most pressing social challenges all bear the mark of engineering. Across Ghana, engineering practitioners at every level of the profession are quietly and consistently shaping the conditions that make progress possible. We celebrate them today, and we celebrate what the profession continues to mean for this nation.

This year’s theme, “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalization,” speaks directly to where Ghana and Africa stand at this moment. Our climate is shifting in ways that strain existing infrastructure. Our cities are absorbing populations faster than current planning and construction can accommodate. Our industries require a depth and scale of engineering capability that demands we think and build differently.

Responding to them requires a genuine shift in how we approach the profession. Smart technologies, digital design tools, data-driven systems, and artificial intelligence are reshaping what is possible across every field of engineering practice. The practitioner who commands these tools alongside strong technical fundamentals is the practitioner Ghana needs to lead its next phase of development.

As Ghana’s statutory regulator, the Engineering Council holds the responsibility of setting the conditions under which engineering is practised in this country. That means creating a regulatory environment where competence is the expectation and where public safety is never negotiable. It means demanding rigour in training, in licensing, and in practice so that the systems and infrastructure Ghanaians depend on are delivered with integrity. It means aligning our frameworks with international standards so that our registered practitioners carry credentials that are recognised and respected across the world.

On this World Engineering Day, I call on every engineering practitioner in Ghana to take ownership of this moment. Bring your expertise to bear on the challenges facing our communities. Integrate the tools of innovation and digitalization into your practice deliberately and fluently. Hold your work to the highest standard, because the public who depend on what you deliver deserve nothing less.

One of the surest ways we can ensure ethical practice across our profession is by ensuring we are all properly licensed to practice. Whether as individual practitioners or engineering firms, holding a valid license from the Engineering Council gives the public confidence that you have met the standards required to ensure safety and earn their trust. I call on every practitioner and every engineering firm to get licensed and adhere to the highest standards of ethical and professional practice. That is how we build a profession Ghana can trust.

Happy World Engineering Day to all.

Ing. Dr. Sitsofe David Addo

The Engineering Council has directed all engineering practitioners in Ghana to regularise their certification and registration by February 27, 2026, urging that practising engineering without registration constitutes an offence under the law.

In a press release issued on Tuesday and signed by the Registrar, the Council said it was acting under the Engineering Council Act, 2011 (Act 819), which mandates it to regulate the practice of engineering in Ghana and to oversee the registration of engineering practitioners, firms and educational units offering engineering programmes.

The Council explained that, under Section 13 of Act 819, no person is permitted to practise engineering or offer engineering services unless duly registered by the Engineering Council.

The Statement stated that Section 14 requires engineering practitioners to obtain certification from a licensed body before they can be registered with the Council, and directed practitioners to liaise with either the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) or the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH) to ensure they are in good standing ahead of the deadline.

According to the Press Release, the Council would publish registers of practitioners, firms and educational units in good standing on its website and in the Gazette to support verification and compliance.

The Council also cautioned that endorsing engineering documents without registration was prohibited, and urged stakeholders and the general public to take note of the registration requirements under Act 819 and the Engineering Council Regulation, 2020 (L.I. 2410).

The Engineering Council, in collaboration with the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly, has confirmed that a construction incident occurred on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at “The Address” project site in Roman Ridge.

Contrary to initial reports, the incident did not involve the collapse of a 10-storey building. Instead, a section of the first-floor podium concrete slab, which was being cast, gave way at around 12:15 pm.

Fourteen workers sustained injuries and were quickly taken to the 37 Military Hospital and Ridge Hospital. As of Wednesday morning, October 29, twelve have been treated and discharged, while two remain in stable condition under observation.

In response, a seven-member investigative committee has been formed. It includes experts from the Engineering Council, Architects Registration Council, NADMO, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly. The committee is tasked with determining the root cause of the failure and recommending measures to prevent future occurrences.

All work on the site has been suspended pending the investigation’s outcome. The committee is expected to issue a public report upon completion of its work.

The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has urged newly inaugurated technical committees of the Engineering Council to discharge their duties with independence, rigor, and integrity, free from political coercion or bias.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Friday, 22 August 2025, the Minister said the establishment of the committees under the Engineering Council Act, 2011 (Act 819) was a matter of “strategic national interest,” adding that Ghana’s safety and the returns on its massive infrastructure investments depend on uncompromising professional standards.

He cautioned against the use of substandard materials, the engagement of unqualified or unlicensed practitioners, and poor supervision of engineering works, describing these as major threats to public safety and national development. “Your expertise is not a privilege for the profession but a service to the nation. You are the vital layer of technical oversight standing between substandard practice and a safe, prosperous Ghana,” he said.

“Your expertise is not a privilege for the profession but a service to the nation. You are the vital layer of technical oversight standing between substandard practice and a safe, prosperous Ghana.”

Outlining the roles of the six committees, the Minister emphasized their responsibility to enforce ethical practice, set standards for education and training, oversee licensing and registration, ensure sound financial and administrative structures, strengthen public sensitization, and uphold both local and international standards of practice.

He stressed that recent engineering failures, including building collapses and water system breakdowns, highlight the urgency of the committees’ work. “The public’s demand for safety and quality does not allow for a slow start. I therefore expect these committees to become functional immediately,” he charged.

The Minister called on members to ensure their recommendations are evidence-based, their judgments fearless and independent, and their actions free from corruption or external influence. He said the Board will rely on their technical advice, while government will hold the Council accountable for outcomes.

The Minister congratulated the appointees, urging them to begin their work with the seriousness it demands. “Let your legacy be a measurable improvement in the quality and safety of every engineering project in this country,” he concluded.

The ceremony took place on Friday, 22 August 2025 at the Engineer’s Center, Roman Ridge, Accra.

In a welcome address, the Registrar, Ing. Isaac Bedu, described the inauguration as an important milestone for the Fourth Governing Board, stressing that the committees are the mechanism through which the Council’s regulatory mandate becomes “operational and effective.”

The committees are Disciplinary, Legal and Ethics; Education and Training; Finance and Administration; Licensing and Registration; Public and International Affairs; and Standards and Professional Practice.

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei described the establishment of the committees as a matter of “strategic national interest,” adding that Ghana’s safety and public investment in infrastructure depend on the uncompromising quality and integrity of engineering practitioners.

He underscored government’s expectations of zero tolerance for substandard materials, unlicensed practice, and poor supervision of engineering works, urging the committees to serve as the technical backbone to translate the Council’s strategic direction into practice.

The Council expects the committees to drive its core functions, including oversight of professional practice, support for education and training, licensing and registration of practitioners and firms, ethical conduct, and adherence to local and international standards.
