The Engineering Council has commended engineering practitioners from the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) for restoring the Akosombo Power Plant to full capacity following a fire at the GRIDCo Switchyard Control Building.

The fire occurred on Thursday, 23rd April 2026, causing a complete shutdown of the plant. Working under difficult conditions, engineers brought the facility back to full operational capacity within days.

The Council’s commendation, signed by Board Chairman Ing. Dr. Sitsofe David Adoo on 1st May 2026, also recognises the leadership of both VRA and GRIDCo for their coordinated response to the incident. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
